This phenomenon does not happen on its own, rather, it is a system that has been neatly organized. Modern technology and contemporary economic systems turn human attention into a market. The entertainment industry and digital ecosystem profit when people remain constantly connected, consuming, and trapped in a cycle of dopamine. Humans as a market are easier to direct, obedient, and submissive without resistance. In such a structure, people do not need to be openly suppressed, they just need to be kept busy, comfortable, and superficially satisfied. Failure will come to them on its own, and they are ready to be exploited as products.
To respond to this issue, I came up with a concept I call Intentional Fasting. Intentional fasting is not a total rejection of technology, but rather a wise attitude of refraining from non essential things. Intentional Fasting is a practice of making choices: when to connect and when to step away, what should be consumed and what should be ignored.
The concept of intentional fasting intersects with the idea of asceticism in ancient Greek philosophy taught by the Stoics such as Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius. They impart lessons on practicing self restraint as a path to inner resilience. Intentional fasting aligns with modern psychological thinking on self regulation and delayed gratification, which was studied by Walter Mischel through self control experiments. In the context of digital life, intentional fasting connects with the idea of digital minimalism proposed by Cal Newport, which involves consciously choosing what is worthy of attention and what is not. Intentional fasting comes as a foundational idea that self-restraint is not a loss, but a strategy to maintain the direction of life.
For me, Intentional Fasting is a way of life based on these two main principles. First, a shift from merely being a consumer to becoming a producer. Amid the hustle and bustle of the digital world, we as humans should not only absorb information, entertainment, and opinions, but also create value, ideas, as well as brilliant works and concepts. Second, Intentional Fasting places technology not as a place to hide, but as a tool to enhance human resources. Technology should be used to learn, practice, and expand human capacity, not just to provide momentary comfort. With these two principles, Intentional Fasting is not a rejection of the times, but an effort to maintain sanity, vitality, and direction amidst the rapidly advancing digital flow.
